Something Old/Something New - Hanawald & M. Jones

Using African Folktales and Audacity to Improve Reading Fluency
Sarah Hanawald, Marilyn Jones

http://fc.greensboroday.org/~shanawald/ncetc07 Link to handout and presentation

Good detail on implementation in classroom. Instructions for students on how to use Audacity.
Link to freeplaymusic is awesome. Had a participant (shown in photo) record in Audacity to show how easy it is.

Process
» start with read alouds
» student selects and read 3-5 to themselves
» student selects a story for their presentation
» read it aloud several times, including reading to a partner or small group
» give feedback to partner about inflection, pronunciation, cadence
took 6-10 class periods
need twice as many (or more) texts as students

Digital Storytelling

Lisa Amerson, American Renaissance School

Link to PhotoStory instructions is great! Idea to use blank PowerPoint handouts to create storyboard. Great examples of student work.

PhotoStory

Instructions for using PhotoStory avail. on http://www.readwritethink.org/lesson_images/lesson986/photo.pdf

» I could import pictures of animals or something else that students are learning about.

6 pairs of headphones with microphone from WalMart for $12 each

She provided the digital pictures.
She has them create music in PhotoStory instead of bringing in music from home.

Will need to edit the volume of the music so can hear the narration.

pictures need to be fairly high resolution

can take up to 15 minutes to create the media file (have something else for students to do during this time)

Had students working in pairs for the science project.

They each had to create a storyboard.

75 minutes classes for 7th & 8th graders – 2 days for storyboard, 1 day to learn photostory, 2 days to finish

Use PowerPoint notes handout as a blank storyboard

MovieMaker

All the files for the movie need to be saved into the same location.

Instruction sheet http://www.readwritethink.org/lesson_images/lesson986/windows.pdf

digital video camera with firewire connection
import movie clips or still photographs

can cut a clip into two

can add narration overtop

drag and drop transitions

add titles and credits
